Kingdom Representative

What does the Kingdom Representative do?

The Kingdom Representative has a variety of tasks in the Dutch Caribbean. He is the ‘eyes and ears’ for the various Ministers in the Netherlands and he keeps the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) informed.
The Kingdom Representative also promotes the cooperation between the public officials of the National Government on Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, as well as the cooperation with the island governments. In turn those administrations can catch up with the Kingdom Representative on issues they consider important for the islands.

Good governance

The Kingdom Representative also monitors the decisions of the islands, for example staff appointments and the financial compensations of the groups in the Island Council.
For the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, he monitors if the public entities do not take decisions that are in conflict with the law or the public interest. He also makes sure that the Island Governor is appointed in accordance with the rules and takes action when the island government is not doing its job properly. All in all, the Kingdom Representative must help promote good governance.

Safety

Another important role the Kingdom Representative has, has to do with safety. The Island Governor may call upon him as an intermediary in case of a fire, a disaster or a crisis and request military assistance. The police or the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee may also request him for this. In case of a disaster, crisis or calamity that affects more than one island, the Kingdom Representative may give the Lieutenant Governors instructions. He may also intervene in case of a state of emergency. Furthermore, the Kingdom Representative ensures that the disaster and crisis plans of the public entities are in order.

The Kingdom Representative works on Bonaire as well as on St. Eustatius and Saba. He does so in part from his office on Bonaire, but he is also regularly on Saba and Statia.
During his work visits he speaks with administrators, public officials, entrepreneurs and politicians and people who are socially active. During his visits he tries as much as possible to be on location and as little as possible to be at the office. When the Kingdom Representative is not on Statia or Saba, he has regular contact by telephone, by e-mail and via videoconferencing.
