Study Financing

If you reside on one of the islands of the Dutch Caribbean (Bonaire, St. Eustatius or Saba) and you are going to study in the Caribbean or in the United States you may apply for a student grant for that purpose. If you are going to study in the Netherlands, you can apply for a start-up allowance.


Conditions student grants Caribbean Netherlands 

There are conditions regarding your age, your education and your nationality and residence.

  • Age: you are younger than 30 years
  • Education: you study full time sbo/mbo (bol), hbo or university in the Caribbean or the US 
  • Nationality and residence: You live in the Dutch Caribbean and you have the Dutch nationality. You do not have the Dutch nationality? Then you are eligible if you have lived at least ten years in the Dutch Caribbean.

Studying in the Netherlands 

If you are going to study in the Netherlands, you can apply for the Dutch study financing at the DUO. In addition you may apply for a one-time start-up allowance at the 'Rijksdienst Caribisch Nederland'.


What is the start-up allowance?

The start-up allowance is meant to pay your crossing, equipment, decoration, bridging and guidance.

There are conditions regarding your age, your education, your nationality and residence.

  • Age: you are younger than 30 years. In addition, for vocational education you must be 18 years or older
  • Education: you will study fulltime at a vocational school level 3 or 4 (SBO), college or university in the Netherlands
  • Nationality and residence: You now live in the Dutch Caribbean and you have the Dutch nationality. You do not have the Dutch nationality? Then you are eligible if you have lived at least ten years in the Dutch Caribbean.
